First week

Heya!

I think this will be a very long post so I write straight in English. First week behind and so far doing well. A lot has happened during one week and even more is to come. Last week I saw one exchange student who was in Oulu last autumn and we went to eat sushi to 花まる (Hanamaru, very good place! Sadly I didn't take any photos ;/ ). I was exploring the local supermarket and found coffee and pasta which I was way too happy about.. :'D I also learned to use the dorm's washing machine and the bus which leaves right next to the dorm and goes to Sapporo Station. It was great to be able to use Japanese when I asked which bus was the right one and how you paid the ride! :)

Sapporo Station is huuuuuuge... More shops and restaurants can be found also underground!

With the help of my Japanese friend who lives in Finland I also managed to order SIM card for my phone and concert tickets to see GENERATIONS in Niigata on 24th of December. Great Christmas gift for myself! :--P I saw them live in London last year with my sister and we got to know couple German and English fans there and the other German fan is going with me this time as well!

After the concert I will go to Tokyo to spend Christmas and New Year in my friend's house. Hopefully I will also meet my tutor students there and in Yokohama!

On Saturday I went to explore Sapporo more with couple girls from my dormitory. We went to Sapporo Station, JR Tower, Bic Camera, Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (Red Brick Building), Odori Park and Sapporo TV Tower. It was a long but very nice day! There was an Autumn Festival going on in the Odori Park, lots of stands everywhere but we had just eaten so couldn't eat anymore...

On Sunday I went to the other dormitory again to pick up some stuff former Finnish students had left me. The key to my bicycle was still missing...

On Monday I finally went to do some clothing shopping with another Japanese tutor student who was in Oulu couple of weeks ago. With her help I also tried to buy a proper camera from Bic Camera, but my card didn't work there so I had to buy it next day with cash. We ate in Provence that was more Western styled restaurant. I had a salad with squids in it and a tomato-mozzarella pasta.

Yesterday we had a HUSTEP orientation that took almost 6 hours... We got to know more about this program, fellow exchange students and how university library works. I saw couple familiar workshop students during the day. :D I also found out that my school starts already tomorrow. *o* I was bit in a hurry to choose my classes, but luckily we had chosen what we wanted to study already during the applying process.

After the orientation I went to Sapporo Station with the guy from last week's sushi and I bought the camera and managed to withdraw money from ATM with Visa Electron. Later in the evening I went to a British Pub with exchange students I had lunch with. We sat and chatted for couple of hours there and quickly visited an arcade. It was a cool place, have to come again later too! At 22/10pm they closed and we walked to the dorm from station with 2 girls, took about 40 minutes, our dorm is so far away...

So that's it this time. Next post will come out probably next weekend with more news from this week. I am also planning to make a post about funny/weird things about Sapporo/Japan I have noticed during my time here, at least compared to Finland.

Applying process

Hello~!

Tänään olisi tarkoitus kertoa vaihdon hakuprosessista, toivottavasti muistan tammikuuhun asti... Eri paikkoihin ja eri yliopistoista on varmasti erilaiset hakutavat, mutta tässä postauksessa kerron vain miten hain omaan ohjelmaani (englanninkielinen HUSTEP - The Hokkaido University Short-Term Exchange Program) Oulun yliopistosta.

Haku kaukokohteisiin (mm. Aasiaan) avautui siis tammikuussa 2016, ja mielessäni oli ollut jo kauan Hokkaidon yliopisto, josta olin kuullut paljon hyvää. Haimme Oulun yliopiston SoleMOVE:n kautta haluamaamme yliopistoon. Lisäksi meidän tuli toimittaa opintorekisteriote englanniksi ja tehdä alustava opintosuunnitelma, jonka hyväksyi tiedekunnan koordinaattori. CEFR-kielitodistus riitti todisteeksi enkun taidosta ja kirjoitimme myös motivaatiokirjeen vain 1. hakutoiveesta. Sitten odoteltiin hetki tuloksia.

Koska Hokkaidolla oli tiukka aikataulu, meidän tuli lähettää omat dokumenttimme nopeammin, mutta saimme kuulla myös tulokset nopeammin. Oulun yliopiston puolesta minut oli hyväksytty, sitten piti odottaa vain, että Hokkaido hyväksyy minut myös. Hokkaidoa varten piti hankkia lisää dokumentteja, kuten lääkärintodistus ja passin kopiot + kuvat. Sieltä lähetettiin kans papereita, jotka tuli täyttää ja lähettää takaisin. Siinäkään ei ollut kovin kauaa aikaa kun deadline jo lähestyi...

Lopulliset tulokset tulivat aprillipäivänä ja ne olivat erittäin positiiviset; minut oli valittu!

Keväällä kaikki vaihtoon lähtijät osallistuivat vaihto-orientaatioon, josta sai paljon lisätietoa tulevasta vaihdosta ja listan asioista, joiden tuli olla kunnossa ennen lähtöä. Tässä esimerkki minun tehtävälistastani:

• opiskelijaviisumi
• rokotukset
• lääkkeet
• stipendit/apurahat
• matkustusilmoitus (ulkoministeriö)
• vakuutukset
• muuttoilmoitus
• lukukausi-ilmoittautuminen (Ouluun)
• pankki

Pitkin kesää hoitelin asiat yksi kerrallaan pois alta ja muutin takaisin lapsuudenkotiini kaikkien tavaroitteni kanssa. Heinäkuussa rupesi tulemaan sähköpostia Hokkaidon yliopistolta. Saimme infopaketin ja alustavan ohjelman syksylle, ja me anoimme opiskelija-asuntolaa ja kerroimme lentoaikataulumme (pick up service:ä varten).

Viisumia varten piti soittaa Suomen Japanin suurlähetystöön ja kysyä mitä liitteitä he tarvitsivat. Netistä näkee kyllä ihan hyvin, mutta aina kannattaa tarkistaa ovatko tiedot ajankohtaiset konsuliosastolta. Tarvitsin hakemusta varten passista kopion ja yhden passikuvan, alkuperäisen Certificate of Eligibility -todistuksen ja sen kopion (Hokkaido lähetti tämän todistuksen elokuussa). Lähetin nämä postissa ja jonkin ajan päästä he soittivat takaisin ilmoittaakseen että viisumi oli haettavissa. Vaihtoon lähtijän tulee näyttää naamansa ja alkuperäinen passinsa suurlähetystössä ja samalla maksetaan käteismaksu.

Matkustin siis Helsinkiin hakeakseni vain tämän viisumin (kokonaisuudessaan vei ehkä n. 10 minuuttia, nopea reissu suurlähetystössä siis) ja samalla kävin moikkaamassa sukulaisia Turussa.

Syyskuun alussa tuli tieto mihin asuntolaan pääsimme ja kuun puolestavälistä lähtien pystyimme osallistumaan japaninkielen testiin, joka määrittää minkä tasoisille japanin kursseille pääsemme (näitä tuloksia yhä odotellaan). Osa informaatiosta jäi siis aika viime tippaan, mutta loppujen lopuksi kaikki saatiin ajoissa. Syy miksi Hokkaido on hyvä vaihtokohde on se, että siellä ei jää pulaan ongelmien kanssa, vaan kaikessa autetaan. (:

Today I'm going to tell about the applying process for exchange, hopefully I remember all the way to January... Of course there are different applying methods for each university, but here I'm going to tell only how I applied for my English program (HUSTEP - The Hokkaido University Short-Term Exchange Program) from the University of Oulu.

Application call for destinations outside Europe (to Asia for example) opened in January 2016 and for a long time I had had Hokkaido University in my mind, because I had heard so much good things about it. We applied through the University of Oulu SoleMOVE online system. In addition we had to submit the transcript of records in English and make a preliminary studying plan which the coordinator of own faculty had to approve. CEFR language certificate was enough to prove English skills and we wrote a motivation letter of the first desired choice. Then we waited for the results.

Because Hokkaido had a busy schedule, we had to send our documents faster than the others, but we also got the results faster. On  behalf of the University of Oulu I had been accepted, then I just had to wait that Hokkaido University would accept me, too. For Hokkaido we had to submit more documents, such as medical certificate and copy of passport and passport photos. They also sent us papers we had to fill, sign and send back. For this we didn't have much time either, deadline approached fast...

The final results came on April Fools' Day and they were very positive: I was chosen!

In spring all the students going exchange participated in an exchange orientation where we got lots of information about coming exchange and a list of things that had to be done before departure. Here's an example of my list:

• student visa

• travel notification (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

• change of address notification
• semester-enrollment (to Oulu)
• bank

Through summer I got these tasks out of the way one by one and moved back to my childhood home with all my stuff. In July we started to get emails from Hokkaido. We got an info package and preliminary plan for autumn and we applied for student dormitories and gave our flight details (for a pick up service).

For the student visa you had to call to the Embassy of Japan in Finland and ask which documents they needed. You can find them on Internet but it was better to call and check they were still topical. For the application I needed a copy of my passport and one passport photo, the original Certificate of Eligibility and a copy of it (Hokkaido sent this certificate in August). I sent these through post and after a while they called me back to tell I can come to get my visa. Exchange students must show their face and passport in the embassy and pay in cash.
So I travelled to Helsinki to get my visa (all in all took about 10 minutes in the embassy, it was quick!) and during the same trip went to Turku to say hi to my relatives.

In the beginning of September we learned which dormitory we would be staying in. From mid-September we were able to take a general Japanese language test which will tell us which level of Japanese we can study here (still waiting for the results).
So, some of the information was left almost to the last minute, but all in all we got everything on time. The reason why Hokkaido is a good place for an exchange is that you won't be left alone with your problems, you will be helped with everything. (:

First days & before exchange

Toista aamuani Sapporossa aloittelen. (*Okei, kirjottelin tätä postausta pitkin päivää, yllättävän kauan kesti...). Aika hulabaloota nää pari päivää on ollu, mutta ainakin jet lag tuntuu vihdoinkin antavan periksi kunnon yöunien jälkeen. Eilen sain vihdoinkin WiFi:n toimimaan huoneessani mikä helpotti suuresti elämää. On se kauheaa miten riippuvaiseksi netistä on tullut nykyään...

Mutta, tiivistetysti voisin aluksi kertoa viimeisistä päivistäni Suomessa. Ennen lähtöäni toimin pari viikkoa tuutorina japanilaisille opiskelijoille (Scandinavian Studies Summer Programme) ja osallistuin Hokkaidon yliopiston opiskelijoiden kanssa tehtävään työpajaan (en tosin ehtiny siellä kauaa olla). Nämä pari viikkoa olivat todella kiireisiä, mutta erittäin mukavia ja antoisia, ja pääsin testaamaan japanin kielen taitoani jo ennen lähtöä. Tulen tapaamaan Hokkaidosta tulleita tuutoroitavia ystäviäni jo ensi viikolla mitä odotan innolla. :)

Been writing this post since morning, took surprisingly long... As this post was so long only in Finnish, I might try to shorten the English one a bit.

Last few days have been very busy, but finally jet lag starts to lose its grip on me at least. Yesterday I also got WiFi to my room (too dependent on it nowadays which sucks)...

But first shortly about my last days in Finland. I was a tutor for some Japanese students during their Scandinavian Studies Summer Program and I participated in a workshop with Hokkaido University students (these two events were different). Last weeks were busy but very nice and I learned so much. I will meet some of the tutor students already next week so I'm excited! :)

Viikonloppuna juuri ennen lähtöäni sain flunssankin, mistä en ollut innoissani. Viimeisiä ostoksia ja asioita hoitelin sekä tapasin ystäviäni kuumeen noustessa samaan aikaan. Pakkailu jäikin viimeiseen päivään, mutta onneksi olin pitkin kesää muuton jälkeen kerännyt tarvittavia tavaroita isoon kassiin, joten ei tarvinnut muuta kuin ne ja valitut vaatteet pakata ja olin valmis lähtöön.

Lento Oulusta lähti 19.9. päivällä kello kaksi ja Helsinkiin minua lähti saattamaan yksi kaveri, iso kiitos hänelle! Lento Helsingistä Nagoyaan Finnairilla (9,5h) meni yllättävän nopeasti eikä olokaan ollut huonoin lääkkeiden ansiosta. Yhden leffan katsoin syödessä ja loput ajasta nukuin. Perillä Nagoyassa oltiin n. klo 9 aamulla paikallista aikaa, eli Suomen aikaa klo 3 yöllä. Satoi todella rankasti ja laskeutumisen ajan oli hirveästi turbulenssia (ei ihmekään, sillä myöhemmin kuulin, että taifuuni oli jyllännyt sillä alueella ja lentoja oli peruttu, onneksi ei meidän lentoja).

Nagoyassa meidän (muitakin vaihtareita samalla lennolla) piti hakea laukkumme ja mennä tullista läpi, mutta se sujui ongelmitta. Ensin Immigration-tiskillä näytimme passin ja toisen lentokoneessa täytetyistä lomakkeista. Meistä otettiin myös sormenjäljet ja naamakuva ja saimme Resident card -kortit. Sen jälkeen haettiin matkalaukut ja tulli oli heti sen jälkeen. Siellä meiltä kysyttiin matkan tarkoitusta ja annoimme tullilomakkeen, jossa kysyttiin esim. ylittyikö tuotavan alkoholin tai tupakan määrä sallitun rajan ja oliko mukana hajuvettä. Lentokenttäviranomaiset olivat todella ystävällisiä ja asiat sujuivat nopeasti, minun ei tarvinnut laukkujakaan avata ollenkaan. Viimeinen jatkolento Sapporoon saapui klo 13:05 paikallista aikaa ja sää oli aurinkoinen ja lämmin, +20 astetta.

Right before my exchange I got a flu.. Packing was left to the last day but there wasn't much to do because I had already decided what to take with me. Flight from Oulu took off on 19.9. around 2pm and friend of mine was escorting me to Helsinki, big thanks to him! Flight from Helsinki to Nagoya (9,5h) by Finnair went fast by and I didn't feel so bad thanks to medication. I watched one movie and slept for the rest of the time. We arrived to Nagoya around 9am local time, so in Finland it was 3am in the night. It was raining hard and during landing there was a lot of turbulence (I found out later that there was a typhoon in the area, luckily our flights were not cancelled).

In Nagoya we had to pick up our baggage (there were other exchange students in the flight too) and go through the customs, but everything went smoothly. At the Immigration desk we had to show passport and give one of the two papers we already had filled in the plane. They took a picture of us and our fingerprints and they gave us our Resident cards. In the customs we gave the other paper and luckily they didn't check my baggage, wouldn't have wanted to pack it again. The airport officers were all so kind! The last flight to Sapporo arrived at 1:05pm and weather was sunny and warm, +20 degrees Celcius.

Hokkaido lähestyy~! / Hokkaido approaching~!

Lisää vaihtareita liittyi joukkoon ja löysimme helposti tiskin, jonne ilmoittauduimme ja josta meidät haki bussi, joka vei meidät omiin asuntoloihimme. Pääsin ykköshakutoiveeseeni, International House Kita 23, building 2:seen. Tämä asuntola on pelkästään naisopiskelijoille, ja täällä on siis myös japanilaisia, kaikissa ei ole. Minunkin huoneistossa on 2 japanilaista, yhteensä omia huoneita on 8 eli 8 tyttöä/huoneisto. Keittiö, vessat ja pesuhuoneet ovat yhteisessä käytössä. Omaan huoneeseen kuuluu sänky, työpöytä ja -tuoli, kirjahylly, vaatekaappi, lavuaari + peili ja jääkaappi (edelliset kaksi todella hyödyllisiä!). Kuvaa voin lisätä kunhan olen saanut kaiken valmiiksi. :D

Tulopäivä oli todella pitkä... Asuntolapapereiden täyttämiseen ja sääntöihin meni kauan aikaa kunnes vihdoin päästiin huoneisiimme. Sitten pitikin lähteä kauppaan ostamaan ensimmäisiä tavaroita + ruokaa. Onneksi avukseni lähti kaksi asuntolassa asuvaa japanilaista, toinen heistä oli viime vuoden Oulussa opiskellut vaihtari, jonka kanssa olin puhunut usein! Oli suuri yllätys kun hän ilmestyi oveni taakse pian muuttoni jälkeen! :--P

Kaupassa käynnin jälkeen pystyin vihdoin rauhoittumaan omaan huoneeseeni. Väsymys painoi, mutta oli pakko purkaa hieman tavaroita, käydä suihkussa ja pedata sänky. Puoliltaöin paikallista aikaa pääsin vihdoinkin nukkumaan.

More exchange students joined us and we had to sign up in some desk where a dormitory bus picked us up. I got my number 1 wish: International House Kita 23, building 2. This dormitory is only for female students and there are Japanese students also, not every dormitory has. In my dorm there will be 8 girls in total, 2 of them Japanese. Kitchen, toilets and bathrooms are common space, rooms that have a bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, wardrobe, mirror, lavatory and fridge are own. Picture will be added when I have cleaned up a bit. :D

Arrival date was very long... Filling the dorm papers took forever and after getting into the rooms, had to go shopping all kinds of stuff + food. Luckily two Japanese girls (not from my dorm) went with me. Other one was last year's exchange student from Oulu with whom I had talked often! It was a huge shock when she was behind my door soon after me moving in! :--P

After shopping I could finally relax in my room. I was so tired, but I still had to do some unpacking, take a shower and make the bed. I got to sleep around midnight.

Seuraava aamu ei alkanut parhaimmalla tavalla. Olin asettanut herätyskelloni asetuksen vahingossa viikonloppuun enkä viikonpäiviin, joten kelloni ei herättänyt minua. Tarkoituksena oli tavata tuutoreiden kanssa klo 8:30 ja lähteä asioille, ja minä satuin sattumalta heräämään 8:24... Siinä sitten kiireessä valmistauduin päivään syömättä ja sen kummemmin miettimättä. Onneksi toinen opiskelija antoi minulle banaanin aamupalaksi. Ehdin juuri ja juuri ajoissa muiden mukaan täyttelemään lappuja päivää varten.

The next morning didn't start the best way. My alarm was accidentally set on weekend so I just happened to wake up at 8:24am, when our scheduled meeting time with our tutors was at 8:30. Without eating nor thinking I got myself ready super fast and made it in time to fill up many papers for the day. Luckily another student gave me her banana to eat.

Menimme ensin jollekin toimistolle viemään osoitteenmuutos-lapun postia varten ja anoimme Japanin terveysvakuutusta, johon pääsimme osaksi. Sitten menimme postitoimistolle antamaan toisen lappusen ja maksamaan laskun. Sieltä matkamme jatkui Hokkaidon yliopiston kampukselle, joka oli kyllä valtava, mutta todella kaunis!

First we went to some office to take our change of address paper there and applied for Japanese Health Insurance which we got. Next place was post office where we gave another paper and paid a bill. From there we went to Hokkaido University campus that was huuge but really beautiful!

Kierreltiin ympäriinsä ja syötiin ruokalassa. Siellä tapasin sattumalta yhden viime viikolla Oulussa olleista tuutoroitavista japanilaisista, se oli siistiä.

Yliopistolla avasimme myös japanilaisen pankkitilin, mikä vei oman aikansa.

We walked around and ate in the canteen. There I suddenly met one of the tutor students who were in Oulu last week, it was cool.

At the university we also opened a Japanese bank account that took its own time.

Kun kaikki viralliset asiat oli päivältä ohi, olimme vapaita. Lähdin vuoden Oulussa olleen vaihtarin kanssa ostamaan minulle adaptereita, WiFin ja muuta tarpeellista. Kävimme myös hakemassa edellisten opiskelijoiden minulle jättämiä tavaroita. Kaikkia ei löytynyt kerralla ja pyörän avainkin oli hukassa... Lainasin toiselle opiskelijalle tarkoitettua pyörää että sain tavarat vietyä ja sovimme, että palautan pyörän hänelle suoraan kun hän tarvitsee sen.

Ostoksia tehdessä tuli samalla nähtyä suuri Sapporo Station. En malta odottaa että pääsen ostamaan uusia vaatteita! :D Söimme illallisen raamen-"valtakunnassa": koko tavaratalon kerros oli täynnä erilaisia raamen-ravintoloita. Herkullista oli, pitää kyllä vielä harjoitella noiden syömäpuikkojen käyttöä...

When all the official things were done for the day, we were free. I went to buy adapters, WiFi and other useful things with the exchange student from Oulu. We also picked up some stuff the previous Finnish students left for me. Unfortunately didn't find all the things and key of the bike was lost so have to go again later...

I got to see huge Sapporo Station while shopping. Can't wait to get to buy new clothes! :D We ate in a raamen "kingdom": the whole floor was full of different kinds of raamen restaurants. It was delicious, need to practice the use of chopsticks though...

Jotta tästä postauksesta ei tule aivan liian pitkä, jätän viime postauksessa mainitsemani hakuprosessin omaksi tekstikseen myöhemmäksi.

Introduction

Moikka!

Täällä ruudun takana 21-vuotias germaanisen filologian opiskelija aloittelee ensimmäistä blogitekstiään. Tarkoituksena on pitää vaihtariblogia vuoden ajan kun opiskelen Japanissa, Hokkaidon yliopistossa Sapporossa. Tämä blogin aloitus jäi nyt viime tippaan sillä tänään lähtö jo koittaakin... :D

Mietin kauan, että kirjoittaisinko blogia, sillä en ole koskaan aiemmin kirjoittanut, mutta moni perhetuttu toivoi sitä ja onhan täältä helpompi lukea kuulumisia. Saatan myöhemmin kirjoittaa tänne myös toisesta vaihdostani tulevaisuudessa, mutta sen näkee sitten.

Mutta, siirrytäänpä itse esittelyyn~~

• Nimeni on Helka-Maria, mutta tulen käyttämään Japanissa vain Helkaa, koska pitkää nimeäni on vaikea muistaa ja siinä on aina selittämistä kuinka se tulee kirjoittaa oikein...
• Olen syntynyt Tampereella, mutta pidän Oulua enemmän kotikaupunkinani, sillä täällä on tullut asuttua jo 15 vuotta.
• Opiskelen tosiaan saksan kieltä pääaineenani Oulun yliopistossa, sivuaineita mm. japani, matkailu ja kauppatieteet. Olen 3. vuoden opiskelija.

• Pidän kielien opiskelusta. Puhun viittä kieltä ja japanin hallitsemisen jälkeen haluaisin aloittaa espanjan.
• Harrastan mm. lukemista ja bujinkan budô taijutsua (japanilainen kamppailulaji, ei kovin tunnettu), uintia ja laskettelua. Aiemmin soitin myös pianoa.

• En ole koskaan aiemmin käynyt Japanissa, mutta toivon sopeutuvani sinne hyvin.
• Tässä blogissa tulen kirjoittamaan Japanin kuulumisiani (saa nähdä mitä kaikkea) suomeksi sekä englanniksi jotta myös kansainväliset ystäväni pystyvät seuraamaan tekemisiäni. Laiskuuden iskiessä kirjoitan suoraan enkuksi...

• Blogin nimi on vielä vaiheessa. Nimi olikin suurin syy miksi blogin aloitus vain venyi ja venyi. Äitini ehdotti nimeä ja toistaiseksi se pysyy.

Miksi saksan opiskelija lähtee Japaniin?

Muutama ihminen nauroi kuullessaan että saksankielisen maan sijasta lähdenkin Japaniin vaihtoon. Opiskeluuni kuuluisi vaihto saksankielisessä maassa, mutta päätin tehdä sen vasta maisterivaiheessa. Nyt halusin viimeinkin tehdä unelmastani totta kun siihen oli loistava tilaisuus. Blogin osoitekin (Helka no yume = Helkan unelma) viittaa suureen unelmaani päästä Japaniin opiskelemaan/asumaan hetkeksi. Onneksi japani on sivuaineeni ja Hokkaidolla voin opiskella lisää kaikkia sivuaineitani.

Kiinnostukseni Japaniin lähti vuonna 2009 kun tutustuin erilaisiin japanilaisiin musiikki-yhtyeisiin (kiitos pikkusiskoni Aliisan) ja siitä lähtien olen haaveillut Japanista. Ja tänään koittaa vihdoin se päivä, jolloin jälleen yksi suurista unelmistani toteutuu ja mahtava seikkailu voi alkaa~!

Flunssasena pakkailua / Packing with the flu

Hello!

Behind the screen sits a 21-year-old German philology student about to write her first blog text. The goal is to write an exchange blog for one year during my exchange in Hokkaido University, Sapporo. The starting of the blog was left to the last minute, because take-off will be today... :D

For long I thought if I should write a blog because I haven't written before, but many of my family friends wished for it, and it is easier to keep track on your actions here. Later in the future I might write about my second exchange here also, but we'll see.

But, let's move on to the introduction itself~~

• My name is Helka-Maria, but in Japan I will use Helka only, because it's hard to remember my long name an there is always explaining how to write it correctly...


• I was born in Tampere, but Oulu feels more like my hometown, been living here for 15 years already.


• I'm studying German as my major in University of Oulu, minors are Japanese, tourism and economics. I'm a 3rd year student.

• I like studying languages. I can speak 5 languages, and after mastering Japanese I would like to start Spanish.

• My hobbies are among other things reading books, bujinkan budô taijutsu (Japanese martial arts, not very well-known), swimming and skiing. I used to play piano before.

• I have never been to Japan, but I hope I will adapt there well.


• In this blog I will be writing about my life in Japan (we'll see which things) in Finnish and English so that my international friends can also follow my doings. If I become too lazy I will write straight in English...

• I'm still bit unsure about the name of the blog. The name was the biggest reason why starting this blog got so late. My mum suggested the name and so far it remains.

Why a German student goes to Japan?

Couple of people laughed when they heard that instead of German speaking country I'm doing my exchange in Japan. There would be exchange in German speaking country as part of my studying programme, but I decided to do it during Master's degree. Now I finally wanted to make my dream come true when I got the chance. The blog address (Helka no yume = Helka's dream) refers to my great dream to study in Japan/live there for a moment. Fortunately Japanese is my minor and in Hokkaido I can study all my minors more.

My interest in Japan began in 2009 when I was introduced to various Japanese music groups (thanks to my little sister Aliisa) and ever since I have been dreaming of Japan. And today will be finally the day when another great dream of mine comes true and epic adventure begins~!
